The British state has taken over every aspect of British life
A catalogue of 394 dated occasions between 1902 and 2026 on which the British state took
charge of something that had been somebody else’s business — schooling, sick
pay, pensions, medicine, housing, wages, movement, speech — with the arrangement it
replaced named in 246 of them.
The site has five parts: a timeline of every entry in date order; the same century told as
eleven eras; what Britain had before the state arrived, from friendly societies to
subscription hospitals; and the whole record sorted by which part of an ordinary life it
landed on.
